The Washington Mystics brought a seven-game winning streak into their Aug. 11 game against the Las Vegas Aces, and still opened as 7.5-point road underdogs. That split between form and price made the matchup one of the sharpest lines on the board before tipoff.
Shakira Austin was a big reason Washington kept drawing attention. She had topped her 17.5-point scoring line in each of her last four games and had gone over nine times in her last 13, giving the Mystics a reliable scoring edge even as the market kept leaning the other way. Washington had also covered in eight straight and had already cashed as an underdog six times.
The numbers behind the streak help explain why the Mystics were being treated like more than a feel-good story. Washington was 11-3 over its last 14 games, allowing 80.9 points per game while ranking first in field-goal defense and second against the three. Six of those wins came against playoff teams, including the Aces, which gave the run more weight than a soft schedule would have. In other words, this was not a hot streak built on empty nights.
That is why the line stood out. The Aces had gone 2-3 on their recent road trip and were playing their fourth game in six days after resting their top scorers in a blowout loss to New York. They still had the kind of firepower that can warp a spread: A’ja Wilson had gone for 35 or more points in each of her last two starts against Washington, and Jackie Young had scored at least 22 points in seven of her last eight games, including 24 on 9-for-17 shooting in the last meeting with the Mystics. Washington, though, had also handled that matchup well at the betting window, going 7-3 against the spread in the last 10 meetings with Vegas.
The injuries only added another layer. Betnijah Laney-Hamilton was day-to-day for Washington, while Dana Evans and Cheyenne Parker-Tyus were out for the Aces. With the game set for Aug. 11 and the Aces still coming off a compressed stretch, the bet was not whether Washington had earned respect; it was whether the Mystics could turn that respect into a road result against a team built to punish any slip.
For now, the market was still asking Washington to prove it all over again. The next answer belonged on the floor in the Mystics Vs Aces game, where a streak, a spread and two tired teams were finally going to meet.
