Thunderstorms are expected to return to Southeast Michigan this afternoon and evening, and a few could become strong to severe as the day wears on. The Storm Prediction Center has placed the region under a Marginal Risk Level 1 of 5 for severe weather today.
That is why Wsbt Weather is getting attention now: the window for stronger storms is not broad, but it is real, and it lines up with the part of the day when many people are still outside. Ashlee Baracy warned that anyone with outdoor plans should stay weather-aware this afternoon and evening and have a way to receive weather alerts.
The greatest potential for stronger storms is expected between I-94 and the Ohio border, where conditions may be more favorable for storm development this morning and again between 3 to 8 PM. Most storms will remain non-severe, but an isolated stronger storm could still bring damaging wind gusts, large hail, heavy rainfall and frequent lightning. For people in Southeast Michigan, that means the threat is less about a widespread outbreak and more about a few storms that can turn quickly and hit hard.
The pattern does not settle down after today. There is a marginal risk for severe thunderstorms Wednesday afternoon in northern communities, isolated chances linger on Thursday, and drier weather develops by Friday and Friday night before another round of unsettled weather arrives over the weekend. Forecast guidance continues to point to periods of heavy rainfall then, while afternoon highs stay in the 80s through the rest of the workweek.
The question now is not whether storms will return, but how much they can organize in the strongest corridor south of I-94 before the weekend pattern brings another round of rain. That is the part of the forecast people should watch most closely.
