Jasmine Guy is returning to one of TV’s most recognizable campus characters when the A Different World Sequel premieres on Netflix on September 24. Guy will reprise Whitley Gilbert, the Hillman College standout who helped turn the original series into a defining portrait of Black college life.
The new series lands 39 years after A Different World first premiered on NBC in 1987, and it brings Whitley back at the center of a story built around her daughter, Deborah Wayne, played by Maleah Joi Moon. That gives the sequel a clear handoff: the older generation is back, but the story follows a new student moving through her parents’ alma mater and the pressures that come with it.
Guy’s return also carries the weight of what made Whitley matter in the first place. In the promotion, Whitley looked back on Hillman as the place where she learned, fell in love, fell out of love, got married, made best friends and arrived as a lonely girl who did not yet know who she was. That is the emotional engine the sequel is leaning on now, and it is why the character still has pull nearly four decades later.
There is also a useful piece of television history behind the reboot. When Lisa Bonet left The Cosby Show, Guy and Kadeem Harrison were pushed into larger starring roles, and their characters eventually became a couple and married. The sequel now returns to those same figures, but the show is not simply replaying the old dynamic. Deborah is moving through Hillman with a new generation around her, and the series is said to include several returning characters from the original run.
That leaves the biggest question in plain sight: how much of the old Hillman will still be there when the new one opens its doors on September 24. Guy is back, Deborah is in place, and the franchise is clearly betting that nostalgia works best when it has somewhere new to go.
