The New England Patriots traded Caedan Wallace to the Miami Dolphins on Thursday, sending the former third-round pick and a 2029 seventh-round draft pick in exchange for a 2028 sixth-round draft pick. The deal gives the Patriots a later round pick in a year closer to the present and sends Wallace to Miami after only two seasons in New England. Wallace, 26, came out of Penn State in the 2024 NFL Draft and measured 6-foot-5 and 320 pounds, but he played in only 10 games with two starts before the club moved him on.
That is the part that makes this trade stand out. Wallace was drafted in the third round, a spot that usually carries a longer runway, yet the Patriots decided they had seen enough to turn him into future draft capital now. The return is not a headline-grabbing haul, but it does give New England a sixth-round pick in 2028 while Miami adds a young offensive lineman who once opened two games at left tackle as a rookie, including contests against the New York Jets on Sept. 19, 2024, and Buffalo on Jan. 5, 2025.
Wallace’s path in New England never fully matched the investment. He arrived as a high pick with size and positional value, but the playing time never followed at the pace the draft slot suggested. Trading him after 10 games and two starts is a sign that the Patriots were willing to cut bait rather than wait for a longer payoff, especially as they continued to reshape the bottom and middle of the roster.
Lalos’ return underscored that broader churn. He had signed with New England on March 16, 2026, then was released on May 20, 2026, before being brought back as part of the same day’s moves. The Patriots also signed rookie free agent S Eric Butler, claimed WR Tejhaun Palmer, signed DT Casey Rogers, signed 2026 second-round draft pick LB Gabe Jacas, claimed WR Kobe Prentice, and added T Caleb Lomu, all while parting with several other players.
For Wallace, the immediate next step is simple: he gets a fresh start in Miami. For New England, the sharper question is whether this was mainly about reclaiming draft flexibility or a judgment that Wallace’s role had already flattened out. The answer is likely in the trade itself. The Patriots chose the pick and the roster spot over the wait.
