BTS is headed to Baltimore for two shows at M&T Bank Stadium on Aug. 10 and 11, and Maryland Gov. Wes Moore has already made the city’s pitch in public. In a social media video posted Sunday, Moore welcomed the group by name and turned a stadium stop into a civic moment.
The timing matters because the concerts land in the middle of BTS’s North American run on its Arirang world tour, with fans watching for every move that comes with the group’s return to full-scale touring. Moore’s video named RM, Jin, Suga, J-Hope, Jimin, V and Jungkook individually, then cut to the line that will travel fastest among the BTS ARMY: “Welcome to Baltimore, y'all. And to every member of the BTS ARMY: let's make some noise!”
BTS began the tour in April at Goyang Stadium after a hiatus of more than three years while all seven members completed mandatory military service in South Korea. From there, the route has moved outward across North America, with Baltimore followed by Arlington on Aug. 15 and 16 and Toronto on Aug. 22 and 23. The group also wrapped European dates in London, Paris and Munich before the North American leg.
The contrast is hard to miss. Toronto City Council approved a temporary co-naming of Yonge Street as BTS Boulevard from Aug. 21 to Sept. 23 and plans to ask the city to proclaim BTS Weekend around the concert dates. Baltimore, by comparison, has so far been given only Moore’s welcome video, even as the city’s shows arrive first. That leaves the most visible official gesture in Maryland as a greeting, not a proclamation.
For BTS fans, that may be enough for now. The Baltimore concerts are already locked in, and the next question is whether Maryland or Baltimore chooses to do more before Aug. 10, or whether Moore’s video stands as the city’s main salute when BTS arrives at M&T Bank Stadium.
