Warner Bros. Discovery has put the first Game of Thrones movie, Aegon’s Conquest, on its slate beyond 2027, making 2028 the earliest release window named so far. The studio reaffirmed that the film is still moving ahead in a quarterly letter to shareholders on August 6, 2026.
That timing is why the Game of Thrones cast remains a search term for fans now: the movie has a title, a studio backer and a broad release window, but no cast has been announced. For viewers waiting on the next screen chapter from Westeros, the update is less about a premiere date than about how far away the film still is.
WBD first unveiled Aegon’s Conquest in April 2026 during a CinemaCon presentation, and the company’s latest letter kept it in the company’s long-range plans. The movie is expected to have a theatrical release and is based on the works of George R.R. Martin, with the story centered on how the Seven Kingdoms were brought together under Targaryen rule.
That history gives the project a clear scale. Aegon the Conqueror founded the Targaryen dynasty and used Balerion the Black Dread, Visenya, Rhaenys, Vhagar and Meraxes to bring six of the seven kingdoms under control. Dorne held out, staying independent for around 200 years after Aegon’s conquest before eventually joining the Seven Kingdoms during the reign of King Daeron II Targaryen.
The film’s route to screen also sits alongside a quieter turn for another corner of the franchise. The Jon Snow Game of Thrones spinoff series starring Kit Harington has been shelved, even though HBO remains active with other projects in the same universe. At Motor City Comic Con in May 2026, Harington said the team had tried to make a Jon Snow show “for a little while” but “couldn’t find the right thing.” He added that he thought Jon Snow “ended well” and that if the character ever returns, it would need to be “for the right reasons.”
For now, the next on-screen signposts are already lined up: A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Season 2 is due in 2027, the final season of House of the Dragon is set for 2028, and Aegon’s Conquest sits beyond 2027 at the earliest. That leaves the movie as a longer-range bet, and the open question is not whether WBD wants it made, but who will be cast when the project finally moves from the slate to the screen.
