NORAD said its F-16 fighter jets intercepted two general aviation aircraft over Bedminster, New Jersey, on Sunday after the planes entered temporary flight restrictions in the area. The aircraft were then safely escorted out of the restricted zone.
The interception came while President Trump was expected to spend time at his golf club, where the airspace restrictions were in place. The 1st Air Force’s Air Forces Northern later clarified that two aircraft were involved, turning what could have been a routine airspace violation into a military response over a sensitive stretch of sky.
What is not yet clear is why the aircraft crossed into the restricted area in the first place. That gap matters because temporary flight restrictions are meant to keep aircraft away from protected airspace, and violations can trigger a rapid response even when the planes are removed without incident.
The two aircraft were escorted out, but the event remains a developing story, with no further action confirmed. For now, the basic facts are settled: the restricted airspace was breached, the jets responded, and the aircraft were pushed back out the same day.
