The Odyssey is now Christopher Nolan’s biggest movie ever at the global box office, passing Dark Knight Rises as of today after reaching $1.1 billion worldwide in four weekends. The film has taken in $461.1 million domestically and $643.6 million overseas, putting it ahead of the 2012 release that had finished at $1.085 billion worldwide.
That is why the highest-grossing movies of all time search is landing here now: the film has crossed the $1 billion line, overtaken Nolan’s previous peak and become one of the year’s defining box-office stories. Jim Orr described it as a “once-in-a-lifetime cinematic journey,” and said Nolan has earned audiences’ trust by consistently delivering must-see theatrical events, with viewers turning out for premium formats and repeat viewings.
The milestone also puts a sharper point on how wide Nolan’s commercial reach has become. His films have now grossed more than $7 billion worldwide, and Universal now holds both his all-time record and his fourth-highest grosser, Oppenheimer, which finished at $975.8 million worldwide. The Odyssey is also now the second-highest grossing R-rated movie worldwide after Deadpool & Wolverine, and the top R-rated title of 2026 in North America and around the world.
There is still room for the total to rise. The film has already become the fifth movie year-to-date to cross $1 billion, and Universal is claiming three of those five releases, including Super Mario Galaxy Movie and Michael. With additional domestic business still ahead and China still to come, The Odyssey’s final place on the all-time list is not set yet, even if its place at the top of Nolan’s filmography already is.
For Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway and Robert Pattinson, it is now the biggest film of their careers globally. For Nolan, it is proof that the audience he built over years of premium-format event movies has not just shown up again — it has lifted The Odyssey beyond Dark Knight Rises and into a new box-office tier of its own.
