The line kept growing. By 10 a.m. Friday, a few hundred people had joined it, turning a Thursday afternoon stakeout into a weekend crush for one of the festival’s biggest draws. Grace said she could not deal with FOMO and said she would “genuinely die” if she missed Charli bumpin’ dat on her. For her and her friends, missing the set was not a minor inconvenience. It was the whole reason they came.
The first concert of the three-day Outside Lands weekend started at noon on Friday, but the most committed fans had been there far earlier. Grace and her group pitched tents and slept overnight, then cleaned up at a nearby donut shop at 4 a.m. Their plan fit a broader pattern around Charli XCX’s Friday night appearance: Wizard Jane and Alex came from Wyoming, with Wizard Jane saying they took three flights and two were delayed while Alex said they drove 36 hours and barely slept to line up early. That intensity sat next to a quieter contradiction. Outside Lands is all ages, yet some of the people in line said teenagers bring the most energy and that many adults want the festival to be 21+. Grayden, 16, put it bluntly: the teens run this. Christine, 15, and Adelaide, 10, lined up with their dad at 9 a.m., and Adelaide said his decision to let her experience it meant a lot. Ron and Cherise, attending for the ninth time, pushed back on the idea that the festival belongs to one age group, saying they feel young and energetic too.
What happened next was simple: Charli XCX was still coming Friday night, and the line had already shown how far fans would go to reach the front. The unanswered question is not whether people wanted the spot — it is how many more would keep joining before the music started.
