Samuel Monroe Jr. remains on life support in a Los Angeles hospital, and his family is now waiting on three or four more CT scans before deciding whether to keep going. Doctors have warned that he could be left in a vegetative state if the scans do not show meaningful improvement.
Shawna Stewart said the family is not ready to make that call yet. The next scans matter because they will help answer whether Monroe Jr., who is in a medically induced coma, has any realistic path back from the damage doctors are seeing now.
The concern centers on what doctors say is happening inside his brain: swelling, enlarged ventricles that are not properly containing cerebral fluid, and seizures tied to the complications. Stewart said the family has already seen flashes of progress during this hospitalization, including a stretch when he was able to breathe without a ventilator for four hours and another moment when he was alert enough to respond by moving his head. At one point, doctors were also able to stop dialysis and take him off blood pressure medication after his kidney function improved.
But that earlier progress did not hold. Monroe Jr. has undergone three brain surgeries, and doctors are still using CT scans to track his condition as the situation remains unstable. Stewart said the family will review the next three or four scans together before deciding what comes next, including whether life support should continue if the outlook does not improve.
The current crisis is the latest chapter in a longer medical ordeal that began roughly 18 months before his April hospitalization, when Stewart said he contracted meningitis while filming in Las Vegas. She said he was repeatedly misdiagnosed, leaving the infection untreated for eight months and allowing it to spread to his spine and brain before doctors identified it. He later developed MRSA pneumonia, and his condition became more severe after he required life support, dialysis and multiple blood transfusions.
That is why the decision ahead is so stark. The family is not waiting for a recovery story now; it is waiting to find out whether the next scans show enough brain function to justify continuing treatment, or whether the damage has already closed off that path.
Monroe Jr. is best known for Menace II Society, and he also appeared in Set It Off, Tales from the Hood, Don’t Be a Menace to South Central While Drinking Your Juice in the Hood and The Players Club. In April, his family launched a GoFundMe as the hospitalization and the medical bills kept mounting.
