He said the fight had to work as the movement of one person controlling 20 ninjas, so their style, timing, and rhythm all needed to be unified. He started by imagining dancers forming peacock wings, then pushed the idea toward a bird in flight and finally a Phoenix. He also said all the martial arts moves are real, which is where the friction lives: the image is fantastical, but the motion is built from practical fight language rather than visual-effects trickery.
The Hand is described as a group of magic ninjas controlled by one powerful mutant, and that is exactly why the choreography lands as a compromise between comic-book spectacle and hand-to-hand realism. Zhang said he wanted the fight to resonate with Spider-Man video game fans, movie fans, animation fans, and martial-arts fans at the same time. That helps explain why the scene was shot on location at Dorchester Prison in Dorset, England: the location gives the climax a hard, enclosed texture that matches the grounded movement underneath the Phoenix image.
The result is a climax that does not just stage a battle but defines the film’s action identity. Jean Grey is not only a character in distress here; she is the visual center of the sequence, with the Phoenix idea shaping how the fight moves and how it reads.
