Melissa Rauch is not just back as Bernadette in Episode 3 of Stuart Fails to Save the Universe. She is back as a 60-foot version of the character, a twist that turns what looks like a familiar return into something far stranger by the end of Spoiler: Bert Is Magic, now streaming on HBO Max.
The new episode opens with Bert tied to the stake and about to be burned alive, while the world around him treats science like a crime. Kripke tells Stuart they have to leave, then learns the machine will not work without magic, which sends them to Alexa, played by Louis Mustillo, and then to Bernadette Rostenkowski, a master sorceress who is supposed to know how to fix it. Rauch said Chuck Lorre called to tell her she would be Bernadette, but not really, just a different version of Bernadette, and she said the cast list left her absolutely ecstatic, especially Kevin Sussman, Lauren Lapkus, Brian Posehn and John Ross Bowie.
That is where the episode starts pulling the rug out. Bernadette first presents herself as the answer they need: she says the Wizards Guild of America pushed her out after claiming she used her powers while they were on strike, and she offers a reversal spell that needs the blood of an innocent. Stuart becomes the target because, as the episode jokes, he has had just one girlfriend. Then the spell breaks the story open. Bernadette is not a helpful sorceress at all. She is a demon, and she turns into a 60-foot monster that destroys Pasadena before Bert uses his powers to get the four of them out just in time.
That reversal matters because it shows how far Stuart Fails to Save the Universe is willing to go with its multiverse setup. Episode 2 already used a surprise Kaley Cuoco cameo as an alternate Penny, and Episode 3 pushes the idea further by bringing back a known character in a form that is almost the opposite of the one fans remember. Rauch’s Bernadette is not a reset to The Big Bang Theory. She is a distortion of it, which is exactly why the return lands.
John Ross Bowie plays Kripke in the episode, and Wil Wheaton appears as a wizard who warns Stuart not to trust Bernadette, a warning that turns out to be accurate in the worst possible way. Wheaton was often seen on The Big Bang Theory playing himself, but here he is part of the spell-driven logic of the spinoff rather than a wink at it. The result is a return that keeps the old faces but changes the rules around them.
For Rauch, the appeal was not just seeing Bernadette again. It was being handed a version of the character with a different engine underneath, one that could surprise even viewers who thought they knew what her return would look like. The unanswered question now is not whether Bernadette can come back. It is what this multiverse will do with her after a 60-foot monster has already leveled Pasadena.
