Jose Ortiz had a race-day problem only a top jockey can have: before the GI, $1-million Whitney Stakes, he had to choose between Magnitude and Nitrogen. The decision sat with his agent, Steve Rushing, who said Friday morning on the Saratoga backstretch that it was one of the toughest calls they have ever faced.
That is why Whitney Stakes 2026 is drawing attention now. Ortiz is one of the top jockeys on the planet, and he was the regular rider of both horses, making the race a direct conflict between two of his key mounts at Saratoga. Magnitude, trained by Steve Asmussen, went in as the 9-5 morning-line favorite after winning all three of his starts this year, all in stakes company, including the Dubai World Cup and the Stephen Foster in Grade I races. Nitrogen, trained by Mark Casse, had won two of four starts this year and came off a 12 3/4-length victory in the GI Ogden Phipps at Saratoga on June 5.
Ortiz said earlier in the meet that Rushing makes the decision, explaining, “I pay him 25 percent. That’s his job. He doesn’t tell me how to ride; I don’t tell him how to be an agent.” Rushing, who has represented Ortiz for the last four years and also represents Irad Ortiz, said, “Absolutely, one of the toughest decisions we had to make,” and added, “Originally, we thought the filly was going to run against fillies.” That left the Whitney with a choice between the older horse division leader in Magnitude and last year’s champion 3-year-old filly in Nitrogen, two horses with major wins and strong form entering one of the meet’s biggest races.
What the decision was remains the point that matters most: Ortiz and Rushing had to settle on one horse, and the other was left without the regular rider who had been on both through their rise. The connection between them is simple, but the consequence is not. One horse would get Ortiz in the Whitney Stakes; the other would not, and Rushing had to live with that call.
