The fight matters because both men arrive with the same UFC record, 1-2, and the same 3-2 mark across their last five bouts. For Nurgozhay, that puts a recent first win inside the company on the line after he finally broke through five months ago, when he beat Rafael Tobias in March during UFC 326.
UFC Vegas 120 is scheduled to begin Saturday with prelims at 5 pm ET, with the main card at 8 pm ET, and the final lineup is expected to reach 12 fights. That places Nurgozhay-Lopes squarely in the part of the night where cards are often shaped by matchups that can shift a division’s next tier without carrying the weight of a main event.
The wrinkle for Nurgozhay is that Lopes arrives with more UFC mileage and a stronger overall résumé, even if the records in the Octagon are even. Lopes is 14-3 overall, has already fought three times more than Nurgozhay in the UFC window that matters here, and is coming off two straight defeats, including a second-round knockout loss to Navajo Stirling on March 28 inside Seattle's Climate Pledge Arena.
That leaves both men in a spot where the numbers tell different stories. Nurgozhay had won 10 fights in succession before reaching the UFC, but his early run there has been uneven; Lopes has the longer body of work, but the current slide means he cannot afford another setback without slipping further behind the curve. Saturday’s bout is less about style labels than arithmetic: one man is trying to turn a fresh breakthrough into momentum, and the other is trying to stop a losing streak before it hardens into the defining fact of his run.
