Christopher Vargas has committed to Ohio State, ending his recruitment and saying he will join the Buckeyes starting in 2028. The top-ranked quarterback in the 2028 class told Hayes Fawcett of Rivals on Saturday that he is headed to Columbus after weighing Ohio State against Oregon, Alabama and Virginia Tech.
For Ohio State, the commitment adds a five-star quarterback who is ranked No. 6 overall in the 2028 composite and gives the program another piece for the future at the sport’s most watched position. Vargas plays at St. John's Prep in Danvers, Massachusetts, where he has built the profile that made him one of the class’s most closely tracked passers.
The fit is not hard to trace. Andrew Ivins of 247Sports described Vargas as a pocket passer whose game is built around precision and reducing mistakes, with elite baseline accuracy on quick reads and the kind of arm that can fit throws into tight windows downfield. That profile helps explain why a school that values efficient quarterback play stayed in front through a recruitment that began in 2024.
Vargas said in June to Dan Hope of Eleven Warriors that he had forged strong ties to Ohio State after the program started recruiting him in 2024. He said, “I’ve been building relationships with them for probably two years or three years now,” and added, “It’s been great.” That long runway mattered. Recruiting rarely turns on one conversation, and when a quarterback is choosing among Power Four options, the school that has spent the most time building trust often ends up with the best chance to close.
There is still a practical question waiting in the background. Ohio State already has Brady Edmunds, a 4-star recruit in the 2027 class, committed to play in Columbus, so Vargas’s arrival will eventually put two high-level young quarterbacks on a similar path through the same room. For now, though, the immediate result is clear: Ohio State has its future quarterback target locked in, and Vargas has ended the waiting for a decision that had been pointing toward the Buckeyes for months.
