Texas had the most reported Candida auris cases in the United States as of July 25, with 1,148 cases, as the CDC said the national total had reached 6,669.
That figure matters because Candida auris is a yeast that can cause severe infections, spread quickly in healthcare settings and resist most antifungal drugs. It can move on objects and surfaces, linger for a long time and pass between people who are sick and people who have no symptoms.
Texas accounted for the biggest share of the national total, and the state’s count included 715 screening cases and 433 clinical cases. Clinical cases are those in which a person tests positive while symptomatic, while screening cases are found when someone is tested even though the fungus is not making them sick. California had the next-highest state total listed, with 873 clinical cases and no screening cases reported.
The concentration in Texas helps explain why the state is drawing so much attention. Screening can uncover hidden spread in healthcare settings, while clinical cases show where patients are already ill. Together, the two figures suggest the fungus is moving through both visible infections and silent colonization, which makes containment harder.
At the same time, the national count sits below the 7,779 cases reported at the same point last year, even though annual case totals have increased since the first U.S. case was reported in 2016. That gap points less to a reversal than to uneven timing in reporting and detection across states, with Texas continuing to report a large share of the burden.
The CDC says handwashing, alcohol-based hand sanitizer, isolation, special disinfectants, gloves and gowns can help slow the spread. For people in hospitals, long-term care facilities or those using medical devices such as breathing tubes, central venous lines, feeding tubes or catheters, the risk remains highest. The bigger question now is not whether Candida auris is still spreading, but how quickly health systems can find it before it moves deeper into care settings.
