That made his second-round 67 even more valuable after an opening 61 at Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, North Carolina. The numbers behind the lead were tight enough to keep the pressure on: two dozen players were still within five shots, a reminder that one clean round could still change everything before the weekend.
Readers were searching the Wyndham Championship leaderboard because this is the PGA Tour’s regular season finale, where every stroke carries extra weight. The winner will take home $1.53 million from an $8.5 million prize fund, and Hossler’s name sat on top when Friday’s play settled down.
The cutline ended at 3 under, which sent Jason Day and Ben Griffin home before the weekend. Jordan Spieth finished his second round at that number, while Brooks Koepka, Tom Kim and Sahith Theegala were among the players close enough to make Hossler look over his shoulder. Hideki Matsuyama was still in the mix at 6 under as of 11:50 a.m. ET, and Ben James had briefly reached 10 under after starting Friday with an eagle at 9:30 a.m. ET.
There was also a break in the middle of the day, with play suspended for 34 minutes because of inclement weather before officials blew the horn just before 5:30 p.m. ET. Hossler’s start gave him the edge, but it did not give him much room. With the field still bunched and the weekend still ahead, his first PGA Tour victory was there to seize, not to assume.
