Kimberly Williams-Paisley said she bought Diane Keaton's hat and gloves at auction, then shared the items online after a moment that felt to her like a sign from her late co-star. On Friday, Aug. 7, she posted that she was "so happy to have some of her iconic style with me" after bringing home the pieces.
The purchase matters because the two actresses built a bond that began on screen and lasted long after their work together. Williams-Paisley played Annie Banks in 1991's Father of the Bride, opposite Keaton as Nina Banks and Steve Martin as George Banks, and they reunited for Father of the Bride Part II in 1995. Williams-Paisley has said she called Keaton one of her idols before they met, and later described her as generous, funny and wise.
In the post, Williams-Paisley said the hat came from the Diane Keaton auction and that Keaton had marked it with the words "NO MORE WAR" and added a skull and crossbones. She and friends unpacked the hat and gloves and were getting ready to photograph them when, she said, a "gorgeous, gigantic bald eagle" landed in a nearby tree, stayed for a moment and flew off. That sighting was rare enough, in her telling, that it felt like Keaton's energy was around them.
The image she shared matched that tribute. One slide showed Williams-Paisley by a lake in a black-and-white suit, wearing Keaton's gloves and black hat, and the final slide showed Keaton wearing the hat herself. It was a small collection, but one that carried the full weight of a friendship that moved from Father of the Bride to real life.
Williams-Paisley has continued to remember Keaton since her death at age 79, including speaking about her on the Call It What It Is podcast. What she has not said yet is how much she paid for the pieces, and that omission leaves the auction purchase with one detail still hidden even as the tribute around it feels complete.
