Jackie finally tells Cole she is ready to be with him in the first episode of season three of My Life with the Walter Boys, and the long-running love triangle at the center of the series shifts from will-they-won’t-they suspense to a relationship that is real, fragile and already under pressure.
That is the kind of payoff fans have been waiting for, and showrunner Melanie Halsall said the show is giving audiences what they have wanted for a long time. The timing matters because season three is now being searched as the next chapter after a season that ends with Jackie and Cole together, but not settled. The title people are typing may point ahead to My Life With The Walter Boys Season 4, but the present story is the season-three break point.
Season three picks up after the last cliffhanger with the Walter family reeling after George is rushed to the hospital following a heart attack. Jackie, Cole and Alex all have to deal with the fallout from Jackie and Cole’s big confession, and the show uses that shakeup to clear the ground for the new pairing. Alex and Jackie go their separate ways in episode one, and by the end of that same hour Jackie and Cole are finally ready to take the next step as a couple.
For much of the season, that step looks like the start of something stable. Jackie and Cole spend time in the honeymoon phase of being in love, and the story lets their chemistry breathe before outside noise starts to weigh on them. It is the kind of turn that makes the season work: the relationship is not denied, but it is not simplified either. It comes after the series has spent two seasons dragging the pair toward each other, which is why the payoff lands so hard when it finally arrives.
The friction is built into the romance from the start. Noah LaLonde said he was surprised that Jackie confronts Cole so early in episode one, and said it is only right that she is the one to initiate the relationship. He also said Cole is hesitant and wary because he feels scarred by previous experiences, and that he is scared he will never stop feeling that way about Jackie. That hesitation keeps the season from turning into easy wish fulfillment, even after the confession everyone wanted finally happens.
Jackie’s side of the story carries its own weight. Nikki Rodriguez said Jackie is growing up and taking responsibility as much as she can, adding that after season one, when she “literally left,” this season has her trying to follow her heart and do right by everybody. That push and pull explains why the relationship with Alex cannot simply be a footnote; Jackie and Alex have an honest conversation and reach a mutual understanding that the effort they put into making it work was not necessarily reflective of a healthy relationship.
By the end of season three, the show has done two things at once. It has answered the question that hung over Jackie, Cole and Alex for so long, and it has shown why the answer was never going to be simple. The relationship that finally begins in episode one ends the season weighed down by outside noise and a cliffhanger finale, which leaves the next chapter dependent on whatever the show chooses to do with that unresolved ending.
