Ramsey stars as Ivy, a 17-year-old cancer survivor whose summer begins after her parents send her to what she calls chemo camp. The film is directed by George Jaques and is built as a coming-of-age comedy, with Ivy finding unexpected friends and romance among a group of misfits. That mix of illness, first love and humor is exactly what makes Sunny Dancer stand out: Quiver has described it as a deeply moving story, while Berry Meyerowitz and Jeff Sackman said it was made for a theatre audience to laugh, cry and cheer together.
The London appearance matters because Sunny Dancer is not arriving cold. It premiered at the 76th Berlin International Film Festival in February, and Thursday night’s premiere was the next step in giving it a broader audience ahead of its August 14 cinema release. The cast around Ramsey is also substantial, with James Norton, Jessica Gunning, Neil Patrick Harris, Earl Cave, Daniel Quinn-Toye, Ruby Stokes, Jasmine Elcock and Conrad Khan all attached to the film.
There is a natural friction inside that pitch. A comedy about cancer and chemo camp could easily tip into sentimentality, but the way the film is being framed suggests something more controlled than that. The challenge now is whether the warmth promised by its festival screenings and its London launch carries through when audiences meet it in cinemas next month.
