A wildfire broke out about 12.5 miles southeast of Bend off China Hat Road near Arnold Ice Cave, and the Deschutes County Sheriff's Office moved quickly to issue Level 1, Level 2 and Level 3 evacuation notices for nearby areas.
The fire was burning primarily in sagebrush and juniper, and crews were actively responding as the sheriff's office released new images from the wildfire south of Bend. Even so, no structures were threatened at the time of the report, a detail that makes the evacuation orders more striking because the response was being driven by the fire's location and behavior, not by immediate damage to homes or buildings.
The area is a high-use recreation destination, which helps explain why officials acted early. A fire in that kind of landscape can move through open brush quickly, and the mix of Level 1, Level 2 and Level 3 notices shows that the danger was not being treated as uniform across the affected area.
