Thud has added seven final cast members as principal photography has already wrapped in Los Angeles, giving the indie supernatural romance a fuller ensemble just as the production window closes. Lauren Holt, Anna Akana, Kevin Bigley, Brian McElhaney, Brandon Scott, Vincent Rodriguez III and Joel Johnstone join a film that stars Sarah Michelle Gellar as the Grim Reaper and Rudy Pankow as the Devil.
That timing matters because the project is no longer a package on paper. It is a finished shoot, backed by a California tax credit, and the cast list now points to a film that has moved from assembly to postproduction with its core players in place. Directed by Mali Elfman from an original screenplay by Noga Pnueli, Thud follows the Grim Reaper and the Devil as they wreak havoc at a three-day destination wedding and fall in love.
For Gellar, the update keeps the film squarely in view at a moment when interest in the title is being driven by the new additions and by the fact that filming is done. The picture already included Piper Curda, Sujata Day, Sterling Sulieman, Steve Agee, Karan Soni, Dot-Marie Jones and Katie Parker, and the latest round broadens the ensemble without revealing who anyone is playing.
That last part is the catch. The seven new cast members are in, but their character details are still under wraps, which leaves the shape of the expanded ensemble unknown even as the lineup grows. Deadline first reported the indie, and the practical next step is clear: with principal photography complete, the film can now move toward the point where the roles, and eventually the release plan, have to come into focus.
