Gregg Sulkin came back as Mason Greyback for the conclusion of Wizards Beyond Waverly Place, and the return landed exactly where fans wanted it: beside Selena Gomez and Jennifer Stone in the final stretch of the series. He was in the second of four episodes, a brief reprisal that put an original character back into the story just as the show closed its run.
That is why Sulkin is the name people are searching now. The original Wizards of Waverly Place ran from 2007 to 2012, and Sulkin said he had been away from the franchise for more than a decade before stepping back on set. He called the moment special and said he was delighted to be back on the show and delighted to work with Selena again, language that fits a reunion fans had been waiting on for years.
For Sulkin, the return was not a matter of relearning Mason so much as slipping back into him. He said it took three seconds to get there, and that all he had to do was look at Selena before it felt as if the characters were back in place. He also said there was only one person who could handle the job of bringing Mason back, and that the show made the right choice. The role may have been short, but the effect was immediate because it reconnected the old pair without pretending time had stopped.
There was, though, a catch built into the story itself. Sulkin said that in his heart, Alex and Mason are always endgame, but the continuation has already established that Alex Russo has married someone else. In the show’s setup, Alex is living with Harper and still linked to Mason, yet the series also says Mason cannot propose because he is dead, while Mason and Harper are only there to guide Alex back to her family after she threw herself through a dimensional rift to save them at the end of Season 2. That leaves Sulkin’s sentimental reading at odds with what the plot has already put on screen.
Even so, the return does what it was meant to do: it gives the final run a direct line back to the original series and gives fans one more look at a pairing that still matters to the people who grew up with it. Sulkin’s turn as Mason was not written as a reset. It was a brief visit, and for now the show has left that visit where it began — on the record, in the final season, and without any promise that Mason Greyback will be back again.
