American Airlines will stop giving AAdvantage elite members complimentary upgrades from economy to business class on some domestic flights with three cabins starting August 25, 2026. On those flights, a cleared upgrade will place eligible travelers in premium economy instead.
The change lands as American Airlines rolls out mid-year updates to its AAdvantage loyalty program, and it will be felt most on premium transcontinental routes and some flights to Hawaii. For travelers searching now, the date matters because the new rule changes what an upgrade means long before August 25 arrives: after that day, the complimentary path no longer reaches business class on the affected aircraft.
The airline is not changing the way complimentary upgrades are handled. Requests will still be made automatically after booking and processed at the normal windows for each elite tier, so the queue itself stays in place even as the cabin at the end of it changes. Upgrades already processed for flights on or after August 25 will be honored.
That is where the policy gets narrower without closing every door. AAdvantage elite members can still move into business class or domestic first class if they bought a premium economy ticket, purchased an Instant Upgrade to premium economy, or are flying on an aircraft without a premium economy cabin. Travelers with systemwide upgrades also keep broader access, including moves from economy to business class, business class to first class, and premium economy to business class or domestic first.
The friction is plain: American Airlines is cutting back on one complimentary upgrade path for elite flyers while preserving other upgrade routes for travelers who already paid for a higher cabin or hold a systemwide upgrade. That means two passengers on the same aircraft may still be treated very differently depending on how they booked, even though both are part of the same loyalty program.
American Airlines has not listed every flight that will be affected, but the scope is already clear enough for AAdvantage members to plan around it. Starting August 25, 2026, the complimentary upgrade ceiling on eligible three-cabin domestic flights drops from business class to premium economy, and the people most likely to notice will be those who have counted on the old upgrade path on premium transcontinental routes and some Hawaii flights.
