Joe Miñoso is leaving Chicago Fire in Season 15, and his run will be brief. He is set to appear in a handful of episodes at the start of the new season, then return one last time to wrap Joe Cruz’s story.
That makes the exit one of the biggest cast changes around Chicago Fire Season 15, because Miñoso has been there since Season 1 and was one of the four original cast members still left. He started as a guest star in the pilot, appeared in virtually every episode of the first season as a recurring actor, and was promoted to a series regular at the start of Season 2.
The timing matters because the show is heading into a reset. Victor Teran is taking over as showrunner for Season 15, Andrea Newman is out after 14 seasons, and Da’Vinchi is joining as a new firefighter. Taylor Kinney and David Eigenberg have been series regulars from Day One, while Miranda Rae Mayo and Taylor Kinney have also signed new deals to stay on.
Miñoso’s departure also comes with a built-in story problem: the show has not said which episode will mark Cruz’s final appearance. That leaves the exit tied to the start of the season, but not pinned to a single moment yet. The cleanest read is that the first stretch of episodes will carry the goodbye, and then Cruz will be written out before the season settles into its new shape.
There is also the matter of where Season 14 left him. In the finale, Cruz and his wife learned the Cruz family is expecting twins, even as Firehouse 51 was sent into a storage facility fire that ended with a roof collapse cliffhanger and several characters heading inside in zero visibility. Fans will have to wait for Season 15 to find out who survives that call, but Miñoso’s exit makes clear that Cruz’s own story is moving toward a close whether the cliffhanger resolves around him or not.
For viewers who have followed Chicago Fire from the beginning, the loss is bigger than a single departure. Miñoso has been one of the last links to the show’s first season, and Season 15 will begin by using only a small number of episodes to finish that chapter before Firehouse 51 moves on.
