Donald Trump on Tuesday night endorsed Amir Hassan for Michigan's 8th Congressional District, putting the Navy veteran and former Federal Law Enforcement Officer into the center of a fight that quickly spilled onto Truth Social. Trump said Hassan had served the nation with distinction and would bring the same fighting spirit to Congress.
The endorsement was the kind of sudden boost that can reset a race. Hassan’s campaign website says he was born and raised in Flint, Michigan, and that he recently reaffirmed his commitment to Christ, details that now sit beside a public reaction from some Trump supporters that was openly hostile and rooted in religion.
Some of the replies came fast and ugly. One supporter wrote, “No Muslims in America 🚫 No Muslims in office.” Another asked, “What has happened to you?” ConitaDrew wrote, “Have you lost your mind, endorsing Muslim candidates? Don’t we have enough of them in Government already?” Kimberlee2922 posted, “Honestly??? Why????” The backlash exposed a sharp break between Trump’s praise of Hassan and the response from part of his online base.
Trump’s endorsement did not come with any sign he was backing away from it. He described Hassan as someone who had fought for the U.S. Navy and protected his community as a Federal Law Enforcement Officer. Hassan, who calls himself an America First Republican, has said he has “zero tolerance for extremists who pervert Islam into something evil” and that he “believes Israel is our strongest ally in the Middle East.”
That combination helps explain why the reaction landed so hard on Tuesday night. Trump was praising service and loyalty, while some of his supporters were attacking Hassan as a Muslim candidate and insisting there should be no Muslims in office. Hassan’s campaign website says, “Jesus Christ is his Lord and Savior,” but the posts on Truth Social showed that, for some Trump supporters, that was not enough to quiet the objection.
For now, the endorsement is a real piece of political cover for Hassan in Michigan's 8th Congressional District. The bigger question is whether Trump keeps that support in place after the backlash or treats the episode as a one-night flare-up and moves on.
