Chipotle pulled jalapenos from its restaurants on Tuesday after Minnesota health officials linked 110 salmonella cases to the outbreak investigation. The chain said it replaced the peppers with product from another grower, a supply move that put one of its core ingredients at the center of a fast-moving public health probe.
The reason the case count is drawing attention now is that most of the 84 Minnesotans interviewed by investigators said they had eaten at Chipotle, and 75 of them did so between June 14 and July 14. Most of those meals fell between June 24 and July 2, a window that matches the kind of retail exposure investigators look for when they try to connect illness reports to a source.
Carlota Medus said the number of reported illnesses was likely to rise because surveillance takes time to catch infections that happened a couple of weeks earlier. Her warning matters because the count had already reached 110 cases in Minnesota, and the investigation was still moving as officials tried to separate what had happened at Chipotle from what might be happening elsewhere.
Chipotle said it acted out of caution and that the Minnesota Department of Health had no ongoing concerns with the company. Yet Medus said the outbreak could still be active if the contaminated food item was being served somewhere else, which leaves open the key question of whether jalapenos were the only problem or just one ingredient in a wider supply chain issue. The Food and Drug Administration opened a traceback investigation on July 22 involving multiple ingredients after a cluster of salmonella cases was identified by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and state officials.
Chipotle also said it had begun reviewing its supply chain with state partners. The company’s shares fell $3.28, or 8.8%, to $34.18 on Tuesday afternoon, as investors reacted to a recall-like response without a final answer on the source. For now, the chain has removed one ingredient, Minnesota has identified more than a hundred cases, and the investigation is still searching for the piece that ties them together.
