Douglas Lee was arrested July 30 in connection with allegations that he sexually assaulted a bartender in Tinley Park after a night that began during her 14-hour shift and ended with her waking up in her car with no memory of how she got there.
Court documents say the woman, who worked at Durbin's, believed she had been drugged. They say she later found her leggings on inside out, her bra beside her on the passenger seat and her shirt tucked into her jacket pocket, then discovered semen inside her vagina when she went to use the bathroom. Prosecutors said those details were part of a case built around surveillance, text messages and biological evidence, not just her recollection.
The arrest gives the case new urgency because it centers on a 54-year-old Illinois State Police sergeant and a bar regular, and because the alleged encounter unfolded in public before moving out of view. The woman told police she had taken three shots over the course of her shift and three more afterward with bar regulars, then left around 12:45 a.m. with girlfriends for Hollstein's, where Lee asked to come along. Video from inside the bar showed him and the woman interacting before leaving hand-in-hand around 1:30 a.m.
What followed is the part court documents can only sketch. The two were seen walking to a nearby fountain, where the woman nearly fell and Lee lifted her to her feet. They then left in an SUV registered to Lee. Flock camera footage later showed Lee taking her to a hotel, and records indicated he used the same credit card he had used at the bar to pay for a room. Prosecutors said Lee later told the woman he had taken her to the hotel and then left her in her vehicle because she could not drive.
Lee's account clashed sharply with what the woman said happened next. She told police she completely blacked out after dancing with friends. When she confronted him the next day, Lee allegedly said she had left her vape pen in his car, asked whether she was questioning his manhood and said everything was consensual. Prosecutors said text messages preserved between them showed Lee acknowledging intercourse and the condition she was in.
The physical evidence was mixed but still pointed in one direction. A rape kit produced too little material to compare against another DNA sample, and a urine screen tested positive for THC, barbiturates and cocaine. Detectives later obtained a search warrant for a buccal swab from Lee, and male DNA matched to his swab was found on the waistband of the woman's leggings.
Court documents and prosecutors' filings now leave the same hard question at the center of the case: what happened inside the hotel after Lee took her there. The arrest says investigators believe they have enough to move forward. The unanswered part is whether the rest of the record will be enough to carry that belief into court.
