Paul W. Downs says he would love to keep Jimmy and Kayla alive after Hacks, but only if whatever comes next feels different from the series viewers already know. At the same time, he says the ending was built to stand on its own, and that he does not want anything else to come after it.
The question matters now because the cast is no longer talking only about how Hacks ends, but about whether its characters could carry on in another form. That is the kind of conversation that follows a finale with enough force to linger, and Downs is making clear that any future project would have to earn its place rather than simply continue the same story.
Downs said the team behind the show had a very specific plan for how to finish the finale, even if they briefly considered stretching the ending or splitting it into two half seasons. He said they stuck to their guns and felt the ending resonated with people, which is why he wants that last episode to be the final thing audiences remember.
He also left the door open just enough to keep the speculation alive. Downs said he would love a Jimmy and Kayla spinoff, but added that it would have to be something different. He floated other corners of the same universe too, saying he would want to see Mayor Jo in her first election and Marty coming to Vegas in the 1970s, a sign that the appetite is for a fresh angle rather than a direct continuation.
Lauren Weedman added a practical note to the conversation, saying her schedule opens up mid September, which at least gives the idea of a future project a possible opening. But nothing has been confirmed, and the uncertainty is part of the point: the creative team appears willing to talk about expansion while still guarding the ending that made Hacks land in the first place.
That balance is also why Hannah Einbinder’s comments carry weight. She said working with Gillian Anderson on Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma gave her a new perspective on the end of Hacks and its legacy, and joked that Anderson constantly talks about X-Files. Einbinder said that made her realize she may be talking about Hacks for the rest of her life, but she sounded grateful for that, not burdened by it.
Einbinder also liked the idea of a Mayor Jo spinoff, saying it had Better Call Saul vibes and picturing the character as “a fucking absolute criminal.” Downs, meanwhile, said his own view of the world is still defined by the finale: the last chapter worked because it was planned that way, and any next step would need a new shape, a new reason and a new ending of its own.
