Randy Travis walked into Bunnia Greenwood’s hospital room in Chicago on July 31 and turned a routine day of cancer treatment into a surprise she had been hoping for for years. Mary Davis rolled him in on a wheelchair at City of Hope Cancer Center, where Greenwood was resting after battling cancer for years.
Greenwood, who the hospital said had faced multiple cancer diagnoses, thanked Travis and told him she had been a fan for years. City of Hope Chicago later said the moment was meant to give her joy when she needed it most, and the emotional weight of the visit came from how plainly it answered a wish she had carried for a long time: meeting Travis in person.
That is why the visit drew attention beyond the hospital walls. Travis has dealt with major health problems of his own since 2013, when a viral upper respiratory infection was followed by viral cardiomyopathy, a near-fatal stroke and surgery. Even so, he made it to Chicago while his current tour was between legs, a public appearance that landed as both a personal gesture and a rare showing of endurance.
City of Hope Chicago said Greenwood, a NICU nurse for more than 30 years, lives by the motto “choose joy,” and the hospital framed the meeting as a chance to deliver that feeling back to her. Travis had just finished the first portion of The More Life Tour, which opened in Louisville in April and picked up additional dates in June, and he is set to resume it on Aug. 21 in Hiawassee, Georgia, before it runs through Nov. 8 in Branson, Missouri. What remains unclear is how the Chicago visit came together, but the result was easy to see: a longtime fan got her moment, and the singer gave it to her in person.
