Spider-Man: Brand New Day opened this weekend to a record-setting $360 million domestically, making it the biggest box office launch of all time and pushing Avengers: Endgame out of the top spot. The film also set marks for the largest preview haul and opening day, another sign that the Spider-Man machine can still deliver a number big enough to rearrange the record books.
For Tom Holland, the result is even more striking. He has now starred in the four highest box office openings of all time: Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Avengers: Endgame, Avengers: Infinity War and Spider-Man: No Way Home. That puts him in a box office lane few performers ever reach, and it comes at a time when The Amazing Spider-man remains one of Hollywood's strangest durable franchises, able to stumble hard and still come back swinging.
That inconsistency is part of the story. The 11 theatrical Spider-Man features have moved through rebooting, reversals of fortune and repeated reinventions, while the character also keeps showing up across animated TV, direct-to-video product, MCU group gatherings and comic books. The franchise has never behaved like a straight line; it has survived by changing shape, then changing again. One of the films, Amazing 2, was meant to open a wider universe of Spidey sagas, only to help trigger a second franchise reboot.
Joe Leydon has long treated that kind of unevenness as part of the appeal, arguing that more can be less and that a superhero series only becomes a canon when it stops pretending every installment has to do the same job. That helps explain why the ranking of these movies can swing from bad to beloved without warning. Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone are singled out for chemistry in Amazing 2, while Spider-Man 3 is remembered here for Thomas Haden Church's Sandman, and the longest entry until Spider-Man: No Way Home is described as a ponderously overstuffed misfire.
The bigger question now is not whether Spider-Man can make money; it clearly can, and in spectacular fashion. It is whether this record-setting opening says anything lasting about the franchise or just reflects a moment when the audience showed up in force. With Beyond the Spider-Verse scheduled for June 18, 2027, the next box office test is already on the calendar, and Holland's place in the record books is set for now.
