The diary does not just repeat the broad public feud around the pandemic; it preserves a private moment in which Obama reached out to Fauci in 2021 to offer support while MAGA attacks on the doctor were still intense. Fauci, then the director of NIAID and Joe Biden’s chief medical adviser, wrote that Obama said Trump was “a hopeless idiot who was a pathologic liar,” a line that sharpens the political edge of a record already being used by critics of Fauci.
The release also sits inside a larger campaign against him. In October 2021, false claims spread about puppy experiments and a journal later issued a correction to a paper about alleged experiments on puppies, prompting angry calls and threats toward Fauci. His assistant stopped answering the phone for two weeks after receiving 3,600 calls in 36 hours. The diary entry came the next month, when the pressure around him was already high and the political temperature around COVID was still rising.
