Environment Canada lifted a red tornado warning on Sunday for parts of the Greater Golden Horseshoe, including St. Catharines, Grimsby, Welland and Niagara Region. The warning was dropped after meteorologists decided the severe thunderstorm they were watching no longer posed the same tornado threat.
The alert mattered because it covered a stretch of Niagara-area communities that were still dealing with fast-moving weather on a busy Sunday. Environment Canada said the storm could have produced a tornado, and damaging winds, large hail and locally intense rainfall were also possible while the warning was in effect.
The tornado warning did not mean a tornado had been confirmed on the ground. It meant the ingredients were there for one to form, and that is why the notice could be raised and then lifted once the immediate threat eased. For people in the affected area, the change was not a sign that the weather had cleared; it was a sign that the most dangerous part had passed.
What did remain was the rain. The same area stayed under a separate yellow rainfall warning on Sunday, with up to 50 mm expected, a reminder that the storm system still had enough moisture to keep causing problems even after the tornado risk faded. Multiple thunderstorms were also expected to move through before drying up for the Civic holiday.
That split between a lifted tornado warning and an active rainfall warning is the part residents needed to watch. The worst-case tornado threat eased, but the day was still set up for repeated downpours and more thunderstorm activity, which meant the headline danger changed rather than disappeared. For anyone in St. Catharines, Grimsby, Welland or the rest of Niagara Region, the immediate question was no longer whether a tornado would form, but how much rain would fall before the system moved on.
