Eau Claire firefighters are mourning the death of Bryce Jungbluth after he suffered a sudden medical emergency on July 26, and the department says a procession is now planned to bring him through Eau Claire on Saturday, Aug. 1, 2026.
The fire department said Jungbluth’s death is being treated as a line-of-duty death. That designation has given the loss an added weight for a department already preparing an Honor Watch, the long-running practice of keeping a firefighter from being alone until burial. The public is being asked to gather safely along the route as the procession moves from Minneapolis, Minn., at around 11 a.m. and reaches Eau Claire around 12:30 p.m.
The announcement puts Clair, Wisconsin at the center of a public mourning period that is already stretching beyond the day of the procession. Eau Claire City Council President Jeremy Gragert and Eau Claire City Manager Dave Solberg have ordered the flags of the United States and the State of Wisconsin at all city buildings to fly at half-staff immediately, and they will stay there until sunset on Aug. 10, the day of Jungbluth’s interment.
That timing leaves one hard question in the middle of the grief: the department has said Jungbluth suffered a sudden medical emergency after coming off duty, but it has not said what that emergency was. What is clear is that the department is asking the community to stand with his family, friends and fellow firefighters while the Honor Watch continues and the procession marks the next public step in the farewell.
For Clair, Wisconsin, the coming days will not be about explanation so much as tribute. The procession, the half-staff flags and the Honor Watch now define the schedule, and Jungbluth will be laid to rest under the same silence that has gathered around his death.
