Lollapalooza kicked off Thursday in Grant Park in Chicago as officials put weather shelters on standby ahead of possible rain this weekend. The festival opened with a crowded downtown footprint, a long list of bag restrictions and a safety message that left little room for guesswork.
This year’s lineup includes Charlie XCX, Tate McRae, Lorde, Olivia Dean, John Summit, Jennie, The Smashing Pumpkins and The XX, the names most likely to drive searches for the Lollapalooza live stream as fans look for a way in without being inside the park. Chicago officials said emergency evacuation shelter sites were ready in the Grant Park North, Grant Park South and Millennium Lakeside Garages, all reachable through the vehicle entrance on Michigan Avenue.
Frank Velez said safety remains the top priority and urged participants to know the surrounding area and heed all warnings. Behind that warning is a festival built to absorb a large crowd, but also one that is being asked to function normally while weather watchers are openly planning for a disruption. The bags rule is strict: small clutch purses and fanny packs no larger than 6" x 9" are allowed, larger bags must be clear and smaller than 12" x 6" x 12", and hydration packs are allowed only if they are emptied, have no more than two total pockets and meet the rest of the restrictions. Aerosol containers, professional video equipment, outside food or beverage and smoking, including vaping, are not allowed.
The street plan around Grant Park shows how long the city has been preparing for this week. Balbo from Columbus to DuSable Lake Shore Drive was closed from July 1 through Aug. 9, Jackson Boulevard from Columbus to DuSable Lake Shore Drive from July 21 through Aug. 8, and a tighter set of closures began July 27 and runs through Aug. 3 on Balbo from Michigan Avenue to Columbus, Jackson from Michigan to Columbus and Columbus from Monroe Street to Roosevelt Road. Some of those closures cover the festival setup and teardown window as much as the event itself, which is why the traffic changes look broader than the four-day music draw on the calendar.
The immediate question is not whether Lollapalooza is happening; it is whether the weekend weather will force the shelters into use. For now, the festival is moving ahead, the garages are ready, and Chicago has made clear that the plan is to keep people moving until conditions say otherwise.
