After a hitless pinch-hitting appearance on Wednesday, he came back on Thursday and went 3-for-5 with a stolen base, finishing the set 6-for-16 with a home run, six RBI and three runs scored.
That production helped The Cubs take three of four in St. Louis and leave with a 5-2 roadtrip. The schedule turned on consecutive extra-inning games, and Hoerner’s bat became part of the reason the Cubs controlled the series despite the late innings stretching the margin.
Hoerner’s exact homer game was not specified, but the line itself was clear enough. He supplied contact all series, and he did it with damage, not just singles. The stolen base on Thursday added another layer to a week in which he kept moving traffic and giving the lineup a different way to score.
