The Atlanta Braves are being linked to a trade that would bring Lane Thomas and Michael Wacha from the Kansas City Royals, a move designed to cover two needs at once. In Ryan Finkelstein's proposal, Atlanta would send Hurston Waldrep, Alex Lodise and Cody Miller to Kansas City.
The appeal is obvious for the Braves. Thomas has been productive this season, and his bat fits a lineup that has struggled against left-handed pitching. Atlanta owns a.700 OPS in that split, good for 19th in baseball, while its left fielders have produced just a.628 OPS, the second-worst mark in the majors. Mike Yastrzemski and Mauricio Dubón have handled most of the playing time there, but the club has not gotten enough offense from the spot.
Thomas has been a familiar name around Atlanta for several years, and the fit is stronger now than it has been in past rumors. He has a.724 OPS and a 102 wRC+ this season, but his numbers jump against left-handers, where he has a.799 OPS and a 124 wRC+. He also showed real power in 2023, when he hit 28 home runs and posted a.783 OPS. That kind of right-handed production is exactly why he keeps surfacing in Braves conversations.
The rotation side of the proposal is more complicated. Atlanta entered the offseason with what looked like a deep starting staff, but injuries and surgeries changed that picture. The Braves still need rotation help, even though their staff has posted the ninth-best ERA in baseball at 3.95. Michael Wacha is being framed as part of that answer, but the proposal does not say whether Kansas City has discussed the deal or whether it would accept the package as built.
That is the real divide here. The Braves have a clear case for pursuing both a bat and a starter, but the Royals would be weighing whether Waldrep, Lodise and Miller are enough to justify moving two established pieces. Until that side of the conversation opens, this remains an idea that explains Atlanta's needs better than it explains the chances of a deal getting done.
