The Los Angeles Dodgers pulled Kendall George and Zyhir Hope out of the Tulsa Drillers’ lineup Saturday night, a last-minute move that landed two days before the MLB trade deadline and sent the conversation straight to trade season. George was not on the field, and the timing alone made the scratch worth a second look.
That kind of late change matters because teams sometimes remove players who are being discussed in trade talks even when those players never end up in the deal. It was not yet clear whether George was scratched because of a trade, a promotion or an injury, but the deadline clock made trade speculation the most immediate reading.
The rest of the Drillers’ lineup made the moment sharper. Josue De Paula was still in it against the Northwest Arkansas Naturals, and he responded with a solo home run in the bottom of the first inning. The contrast showed that this was not a broad team-wide shuffle, but a specific late adjustment involving two outfield prospects.
The scratch did not necessarily mean both Hope and George were being moved. The cleaner reading is narrower: the Dodgers have a deep pool of minor league outfielders, and MLB Pipeline lists six of them among the organization’s top 10 prospects, with De Paula at No. 1, Mike Sirota at No. 2, Eduardo Quintero at No. 3, Hope at No. 5, Charles Davalan at No. 8 and James Tibbs III at No. 10. In that kind of pipeline, a late lineup change can signal interest without closing the book on anyone.
That is why the scratch matters now. It arrived just as the MLB trade deadline approached, and the Dodgers were expected to pursue Tarik Skubal. One report said teams were starting to exchange offers with the Tigers for Skubal, which only added to the sense that roster movement could be coming. For George, the next step was still unknown: trade, promotion or injury remained open, but the deadline had made the question impossible to ignore.
