Panamá Sub-21 opened its Central American and Caribbean Games campaign with a 1-0 loss to Colombia on Thursday, July 30, after Kener González scored in the 82nd minute at Estadio Moca 85 in Moca.
The result left Panamá with an immediate need to respond, and it came in a match where César Aguilar’s lineup included Lucca Bellina, Abdul Morales, Ángel Díaz, Kevin Quintero, Blas Pérez, Rubén Collymore, Ryan Gómez, Albert Córdoba, Kevin Bernal, Miguel Muñoz and captain Anel Ryce.
The game matters today because Panamá is back on the schedule on Saturday, August 1, when it faces Costa Rica at 3:00pm at Estadio El Condor in La Vega. Colombia also moves on to another Group B match the same day, against Cuba at 6:00pm, after Cuba beat Costa Rica 1-0 in the other opening result.
That early activity is what puts Colombia and Cuba on top of Group B for now, but the table is still built on only the opening results. With one late goal deciding Panamá’s first match and little else settled, the standings are provisional by design, not a sign that the group has found its shape.
For Panamá, the task is simple and unforgiving: recover quickly, because the loss to Colombia already leaves no margin on a schedule that turns again in less than 48 hours.
