Rivals Recruiting Prediction Machine gives Miami a 97.2 percent likelihood, while the 247Sports Crystal Ball is at 100 percent for Miami, a level of confidence that leaves little room for surprise if the forecast holds.
The school’s advantage has been built over time. Miami offered Sears a scholarship two years ago and, since then, Mario Cristobal and his staff have kept him close to the program through repeated visits to campus for spring practice, camps and Saturday games. Frank Tucker has been leading the effort to bring Sears onside, and that steady presence has made Miami the hometown program that has stayed in the center of his thinking. Sears, who is from Pembroke Pines, Fla. Columbus and reclassified to move up a year, fits the profile of a prospect whose recruitment has been watched closely because the timeline was always moving faster than most.
Michigan did not let the race drift quietly to the finish. The Wolverines were reported to have made an aggressive late push in an effort to convince Sears before Friday’s announcement, which is the only reason the final stretch has carried any real suspense. Even so, the projections still point overwhelmingly to Miami, and that gap matters because recruiting predictions do not leave much doubt when both major forecast systems are aligned this strongly.
Friday should answer the question directly. If Sears follows the numbers, Miami will have landed the cornerback it pursued early and kept chasing every step of the way.
