Mahershala Ali says Marvel never made his Blade movie, and he has moved on. The actor said the stalled reboot simply would have happened if Marvel had wanted it to, putting a blunt end to years of speculation around one of the MCU’s most talked-about unfinished projects.
That answer matters now because Ali is speaking while promoting a different film, Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother, and because the Blade role was once sold as a major turn for him. Seven years ago, he walked out at the end of a Marvel panel at Comic Con to reveal he would be the MCU’s Blade, and almost a decade later he briefly returned in voice form in the post-credit scene for the MCU’s Eternals. The movie itself, though, never got to the point where audiences could actually see it.
Ali’s latest project brings him back together with Bassam Tariq, the filmmaker who was hired to direct Blade after making his narrative feature debut with 2020’s Mogul Mowgli. Tariq later wrote Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother after a near-tragedy in his own life, and Ali signed on as Latif, a devout Muslim hitman in Houston whose life is shattered when his wife suddenly dies, leaving him with a newborn and two other children. In the film, Latif is dragged into a political and religious war while trying to find breast milk for his baby.
The Blade delay has long carried two explanations that do not quite match. Kevin Feige has said the script never came together, and he said he felt like “a gigantic loser and a failure” after the project foundered. Ali’s version is simpler and harsher: if Marvel had wanted to make it, they would have made it. That leaves the same unanswered question hanging over the project — not whether Blade was announced, but why a movie with a star already in place and a director already hired never moved beyond talk.
For Ali, the practical result is clear. Instead of waiting on Blade, he has moved into a different lead role with a different filmmaker, one he was drawn to for the challenge and the intimacy of the part. He has also said he did not feel great about how things ended with Blade, but the message now is unmistakable: that chapter is over, and the next one is the one he is actually making.
