Anthony Russo said the runtime for Avengers: Doomsday is still too early to pin down, even as the Marvel film moves through a late-stage edit that he described as substantial. He would not confirm the earlier working estimate of 2 hours and 45 minutes, but he did make one thing clear: the movie is not finished yet.
That update landed at San Diego Comic-Con 2026, where fans were already looking for any sign of how long the next Marvel event film might run. Russo told the crowd, “Hopefully we will make you happy,” while framing the project as a movie with a lot riding on every minute because it is still deep in the edit and is not complete.
The scale is part of the reason the final cut is still shifting. Russo said the team is “still kneading the dough” and will keep editing for as long as they can, calling the film so complex and so layered that it includes so many amazing characters. The stacked cast stretches across the Marvel Cinematic Universe and beyond, with Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers, Chris Hemsworth’s Thor, the Thunderbolts, the Fox-era X-Men, the new Fantastic Four and the Wakandans all in play.
That is why the runtime question matters now. Earlier this month, reports put the working length at 2 hours and 45 minutes, but Russo stopped short of confirming that figure. If Avengers: Doomsday crosses three hours, it would pass Avengers: Endgame and become the longest MCU movie in history. Endgame still holds that mark at 3 hours and 1 minute, a standard this film could yet challenge if the edit keeps stretching.
There is another wrinkle. Robert Downey Jr. has already seen some cut of the film and praised it as absolutely fantastic, adding that the project might yet let the franchise “redeem ourselves yet.” That confidence sits beside the more practical reality Russo described: a film this crowded, and this central to Marvel Phase 6, is still being shaped in the edit suite while the release date keeps approaching.
For now, the answer to the question fans are asking is simple. Avengers: Doomsday still does not have a final runtime, and Russo is leaving the door open for it to grow. The only fixed date in the picture is December 18, when the film arrives whether the cut is lean, long or record-setting.
