Spider-Man: Brand New Day is doing more than teasing a fight with Boomerang and Scorpion. Its marketing is now folding the Hand into the same story, a move that treats the ninja clan’s history in Netflix’s Daredevil world as part of the record.
That matters because the movie is not presenting the Hand as a fresh name for viewers to learn later. It is placing the group inside the Spider Tracker, the Sony and Samsung project built to follow all of Ned Leeds’ notes about the hero he is trying to unmask ahead of the July 31 release. One section of that tracker refers to the Hand’s emergence, which is a small detail with a large effect: it makes the group’s past feel documented, not invented for this movie.
The timing is what gives the move its weight. The Hand made its live-action debut in Daredevil Season 1, then kept causing trouble for Matt Murdock in Daredevil Season 2 before becoming a thorn in the side of the heroes in The Defenders. Brand New Day now canonizes those exploits instead of treating them like a separate corner of Marvel history, and that is the clearest sign yet that Marvel Studios is willing to let the older Netflix Marvel continuity sit inside the newer MCU story line.
There is, though, one odd wrinkle in the way this is being sold. The Hand’s defeat in The Defenders appears to be public knowledge, yet the group is being shown again in New York and in a prison fight as if it has simply resurfaced. Ned Leeds is even confused by the Hand’s sudden resurrection, which leaves the movie with a question it does not answer: whether this is the same Hand returning from the old shows, or a new version of a problem everyone already thinks was finished.
That is why the crossover chatter is focusing so heavily on Matt Murdock. He went to jail at the end of Born Again Season 2 for the crimes he committed as Daredevil, and Peter Parker first crossed paths with him in Spider-Man: No Way Home after his identity was exposed and he needed a lawyer. Even if Doctor Strange’s spell means Murdock likely has no memory of that meeting, the pairing still gives Brand New Day a clean bridge between Spider-Man and Daredevil, with Punisher also set to offer Spider-Man some help. The film’s answer appears to be simple: the Hand is not being revived as a leftover villain, but as a canon piece of Daredevil history that now belongs in Spider-Man’s world too.
