Oscar winner Glen Hansard died in a motorcycle crash in Dublin on Wednesday morning, after a single-vehicle collision at Strawberry Beds in Lucan before 4.30am. He was 56.
The crash happened on Lower Road, between Tinkers Hill and Rugged Lane, and emergency services were alerted just before 4.30am. Garda said the motorcyclist was treated at the scene but was pronounced deceased a short time later. The loss lands hard because Hansard was not just a public figure; he was a familiar presence in the music life around Dublin, and the news turns a late-night outing into a fatal morning no one expected.
Hansard had spent time at the Wren’s Nest pub on Lower Road on Tuesday night, where he often attended trad sessions with Trad 15. A video of him performing a song was filmed there that night, and this week’s session had been advertised as a celebration of the Mayo footballers’ victory in Sunday’s All-Ireland final. By Thursday, the pub told RTÉ News that he had left after closing time and departed eastwards, adding that there was no after-hours trading or lock-in.
That detail matters because it sits uneasily beside the route described in the crash: Hansard was travelling westwards on Lower Road when he went down, and the collision took place 2-3km from the pub where he had spent time playing music. The crash does not appear to have involved any other road users, which makes the next steps narrower but no less serious. A Garda inquiry will still be carried out to prepare a file for a coroner’s inquest, even though a criminal investigation does not arise.
