Wonder Man has been canceled at Disney+ after Disney announced a Season 2 renewal in March, ending a series that had already been publicly put on a second-season track. The show’s writers were released to move on to other projects, and no Season 2 writers’ room was ever opened.
The reversal lands hardest for Yahya Abdul Mateen II, who starred as Simon Williams and earned an Emmy nomination for outstanding lead actor in a comedy series for the role. Ben Kingsley also starred as Trevor Slattery, and the first season drew a 91% critical approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
That made the cancellation unusual even by Marvel standards. Marvel’s live-action Disney+ series have mostly been single-season projects, but Wonder Man had already broken from that pattern when Disney renewed it in March. Its early performance was modest rather than runaway: it reached number eight on the streaming top 10 originals chart for the week of Jan. 26-Feb. 1 and then fell off the Nielsen chart the following week.
The show’s creative team had set up a story built around performance, ambition and aging fame. The official logline described Simon Williams as an aspiring Hollywood actor struggling to get his career off the ground and Trevor Slattery as an actor whose biggest roles may be well behind him. Reviews also singled out the pairing; one critic wrote that Abdul-Mateen and Kingsley made their characters “equally ridiculous and romantic,” with a motivation more intimate than saving the world.
What Disney has not explained is why the March renewal was reversed before a second-season writers’ room ever existed. The best reading is that the company decided the series no longer fit its near-term plan, even if the characters themselves are not necessarily gone for good. The question now is not whether Wonder Man continues as a season, but whether Simon Williams and Trevor Slattery show up again somewhere else in Marvel’s future.
