IGN has released an official Street Fighter clip titled “Blanka vs. Ryu,” and it puts Jason Momoa’s Blanka face to face with Andrew Koji’s Ryu. The fight gives the first clear look at one of the movie’s big matchups while the film heads toward its theatrical opening on October 16, 2026.

That timing matters because Street Fighter is still months from release, yet this clip is already doing the work of a full sales pitch. It shows the movie’s tone in motion and starts to answer the question of how Capcom’s fighting-game world has been reworked for the screen. The film is set in 1993, which gives the story a period frame even as the promotion arrives in the present.

In the movie, Ryu and Ken Masters are estranged, and Chun-Li recruits them for the next World Warrior Tournament. That setup points to a larger battle royal and a deadly conspiracy behind it, so the Blanka-versus-Ryu clash is not just a showcase fight. It is one piece of a wider structure that is meant to push the characters into the tournament and the plot around it.

The choice of 1993 is not random. It places the story in an earlier game era, before the modern image of the franchise took hold, and gives the film room to treat the tournament as a world already in motion rather than a new spectacle. In that frame, the clip works as proof of concept: the characters are there, the conflict is physical, and the movie is aiming to sell the world before opening night.

The project is directed by Kitao Sakurai and produced by Mary Parent, Cale Boyter, Momoa, Takayuki Nakayama and Stefan Makhoul, with a screenplay by Sakurai and T.J. Fixman and a story by Dalan Musson and Gary Dauberman. It is based on the Capcom video game Street Fighter, and the cast also includes Noah Centineo, Callina Liang, Joe “Roman Reigns” Anoai, David Dastmalchian, Cody Rhodes, Andrew Schulz, Eric André, Vidyut Jammwal, Orville Peck, Olivier Richters, Hirooki Goto, Rayna Vallandingham, Alexander Volkanovski and Curtis ‘50 Cent’ Jackson.

For now, the clip answers the immediate question of who is playing Blanka and Ryu, and it does more than that by showing the movie leaning on combat to introduce its world. What it does not show is how much of that fight survives intact in the finished film, but the release date is fixed: Street Fighter opens in theaters on October 16, 2026.
