Jonathan Taylor Thomas resurfaced in a rare public photo with his former Home Improvement castmates, giving fans an unexpected look at a reunion that had not been seen in public for years. Patricia Richardson shared the image on Instagram on Wednesday, July 29, with Thomas and Taran Noah Smith standing on either side of her.
The photo matters because Thomas, 44, has spent most of his adult life out of view. He stepped back from acting before the final season of Home Improvement to attend college, then largely stayed away from the spotlight after the show ended in 1999. Seeing him again with Richardson and Smith, who is 42, is a reminder of how long that separation lasted and why even a single picture can feel like news.
For fans of Home Improvement, the reunion also lands with the force of a small update on Thomas himself. Richardson called the pair “my other boys” in her post, and the image captures three people who played family on television more than two decades ago now gathered as adults with no camera script in front of them. Richardson said in 2024 that Thomas is not really interested in acting and wants to direct and write, which fits the path he described years earlier when he said he had been going nonstop since he was 8 years old and wanted time for school, travel and a break. He also said at the 1999 Kids’ Choice Awards that leaving the show was a good decision for him.
That leaves the new photo with a small but telling gap in the story: it shows Thomas willing to appear again, even if only briefly, but it does not explain why he chose this reunion now. Richardson has since reunited with Tim Allen on Last Man Standing and Shifting Gears, and Allen said in 2025 that Thomas had shown up on the set, adding that everything is a possibility.
