Ride Or Die has become Prime Video’s new number one action thriller series, and it is doing it by turning a reluctant partnership into a runaway chase. Hannah Waddingham plays Judith, an elite assassin pushed into retirement by the Agency, while Octavia Spencer plays Debbie, an American housewife who only learns in the first episode that the woman she thought was an accountant has been living a far deadlier life.
The reason the show is drawing attention now is simple: it has climbed to the top of the platform’s action-thriller lineup while giving viewers two very different leads to follow. Judith is given one final assignment to prove she still belongs, but the setup goes wrong almost immediately when she slips into Billy Donovan’s hotel room and finds four men already dead. Donovan is attending his Water Relief Gala, which is actually a front for money laundering, and Judith’s mission quickly stops looking like a clean job.
What happens next is what gives the series its momentum. Debbie’s husband, David, is believed to owe the Albanian mob £24 million, and once Debbie discovers Judith’s real profession, both women are thrown into a flight across Europe. Judith chases a speeding car on a motorcycle. She escapes captivity in a train cabin while temporarily paralyzed by drugs. Debbie, for her part, uses pepper spray to take out two burly men after she is kidnapped, and her antiques knowledge becomes part of the fight as she helps identify valuable items that can be used to chip away at David’s debt.
That clash is also where the friction sits. The Agency does not just retire Judith because she is old enough to be pushed aside; it does it because she is old and insubordinate, the kind of operative who breaks the rules the moment they start making sense to her. The same outfit forbids emotional attachments and treats them as liabilities, which makes Judith and Debbie a problem from the start. One is trained to kill. The other has spent years believing she was married to a man with a debt problem and nothing more. Together, they turn into a liability the Agency cannot fully control.
That is why Ride Or Die is landing as more than another action series. It has the hard-charging pacing of a thriller and the dry, odd-couple energy that makes the violence easier to watch and harder to predict. The opening assignment may be Judith’s last chance on paper, but once Debbie is pulled in, the story stops being about a retirement order and becomes a race to outrun the mob, the Agency and the lies that kept both women in separate worlds for so long.
