Steve Lacy may have let a major Marvel secret slip on the red carpet at the Spider-Man: Brand New Day world premiere. Asked which character he was most excited to see without spoiling anything, he answered with one name: Jean.
He did not stop there. Lacy added that Jean is the villain and said there was a reason to her madness, then, when pressed on whether he had just given away too much, repeated that he liked her character and did not know why he had said it. The exchange happened Sunday night at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, and the clip moved fast across X, where fans immediately linked Jean to Sadie Sink.
That reaction made sense because Sink has been the film’s biggest locked-door mystery. She was cast in March 2025 without a character name attached, and the marketing campaign has kept her role quiet ever since. Over the past year, one fan theory in particular had taken hold: that she was playing Jean Grey. Lacy’s comment poured fuel on that idea within minutes.
But the name he said does not settle the question. He never said Jean Grey, and the film also includes Jean DeWolff, played by Liza Colón-Zayas, which leaves room for a different reading of the same spoiler-sized tease. The film’s official synopsis also points to “a powerful villain no one can even see,” while Tom Holland has already told TikTok that Jean Grey is “not in this movie, but it would be pretty cool.”
Lacy was not at the premiere by accident. His song “oh yeah?” appears on the soundtrack, and he was on the red carpet with Valkyrae, who asked the question that set off the whole chain reaction. Director Destin Daniel Cretton has said the film is better when audiences arrive not knowing certain things, which is exactly the sort of guardrail this moment seemed to test.
For now, the safest reading is that the premiere gave fans a fresh clue, not a clean answer. Whether Lacy accidentally pointed to Sink’s role or simply named the wrong Jean, the clip has done what the campaign tried to avoid: it turned a quiet part of the film into the loudest conversation around it. Spider-Man: Brand New Day opens in the UK on Thursday and in the US on Friday.
