Tom Selleck says the end of Blue Bloods came after the cast had already agreed to take a 25 percent cut in salary in the show’s last year, an effort to keep the long-running CBS drama alive. Even after that concession, CBS ended the series after 14 seasons.
Selleck, speaking in an interview with Ted Danson on Where Everybody Knows Your Name, said everyone wanted to come back and had been working to keep the show on the air. He said the cast had done “all sorts of things” to preserve it, including that pay cut, and that nobody wanted to leave. That is the reason the Blue Bloods cancellation is drawing fresh attention now: it was not framed as a show in decline, but as one that still had support inside the cast.
The numbers Selleck pointed to help explain why the ending still feels abrupt. He said Blue Bloods was number six out of the top 100 shows on broadcast television in its fifteenth year, which means it was still among the highest-rated broadcasts in that broad ranking of network shows. In other words, the series was not being remembered as a program that had simply run out of audience or goodwill.
Blue Bloods starred Selleck alongside Donnie Wahlberg, Bridget Moynahan, Will Estes and Len Cariou, and its ending closed the door on a group that, by Selleck’s account, wanted to keep working together. He said nobody wanted to leave and everybody was going to stay on, which makes the cancellation feel less like a creative farewell than a business decision made over the cast’s objections.
That tension matters because the show’s story did not end with the franchise itself. Boston Blue, a spinoff of Blue Bloods, has carried the family thread forward, and Sonequa Martin-Green has said the production would love to have Selleck appear as a guest star. She said the team has been talking about him for a long time and wants the story to be right if he comes in, which keeps the door open even as CBS shut Blue Bloods down after 14 seasons. Marisa Ramirez, Bridget Moynahan, Len Cariou and Will Hochman already made guest appearances in the first season of Boston Blue, and Boston Blue Season 2 is set to premiere on Friday, October 9, at 10/9c on CBS.
For Selleck, the unresolved question is not whether the cast wanted more time. It did. The question is why CBS still ended a show that, by his description, was financially adjusted, still watched and still wanted by the people who made it.
